What is democracy? (Our Generation. Our Vote.)

This lesson is the first of a four-part set which has been designed to introduce students to the concept of democracy. Each of the packs can be delivered independently of each other, or combined together to form a broader scheme of work.

Students consider what a democracy is, why it is important and how it impacts their day-to-day lives. Through taking part students will be able to answer key questions such as:

What does democracy mean?
What are the key features of a democratic country?
How has democracy evolved throughout history and how might it continue to evolve?
What are the key features of UK Parliament?
How does Parliament differ from the Government?

What is a General Election? (Primary Ages 7-11) (English)

In this lesson created by the team at Young Citizens, pupils explore the meaning of ‘democracy,’ and the ways in which citizens can participate in democratic life in the UK. Pupils learn about the role of the Prime Minister, Members of Parliament and political parties, and how a general election works. They consider why it is important for citizens to be well informed before casting their vote, and how they can find out about the views of candidates and parties.

By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to:

➯ Describe what the word ‘democracy’ means;
➯ Explore what the role of the Prime Minister and Members of Parliament are;
➯ Identify what a political party is;
➯ Explain how a general election works and the importance of a secret ballot;
➯ Explore how they can find out about the views of politicians and why this is important.

They consider why it is important for citizens to be well informed before casting their vote, and how they can find out about the views of candidates and parties. Pupils also look at the reasoning behind the secret ballot, and consider the voting age debate.

The lesson contains an extension activity that introduces the class to women’s fight for the vote through the Suffrage Movement.

Local and central government (Primary Ages 7-11) (English)

In this lesson created by the team at Young Citizens, pupils learn about the function of central and local government and the difference between MPs and local councillors. Pupils explore the job of parliament, taking a look at the role of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Pupils explore a range of issues faced by citizens and decide which political representative is best placed to help. They then go on to consider the ways that they can participate in our democracy, and finally apply and consolidate their learning by designing a new political party and voting for a candidate to stand for election.

➯ Describe what happens in parliament;
➯ Identify different ways they can make their voices heard by key decision makers in their area.

In this Our Generation Our Vote session, learners explore party manifestos and cast their vote as part of Our Generation Our Vote! This is the Primary age version in English
Please see the PowerPoint slides for delivery notes to review in advance of the session. This session can be delivered in multiple parts or in one go but we recommend that you allow a minimum of 60-80 minutes overall. If you split the session, this would be a minimum of 40-60 minutes for the exploring issues/manifestos section (slides 1-4) and a minimum of** **20 minutes for the section where learners cast their votes (slides 5-10).
You will need your ballot papers and boxes for this session. We recommend that you also print the Manifesto Policy Summaries (available via the link in the slides) in advance to use in the activity.
