Why do we have laws? (Primary Ages 7-11) (English)

In this lesson created by the team at Young Citizens, pupils explore why we need laws and how they are made using our parliamentary systems. Pupils learn about the different roles that contribute to the creation and upholding of the law. They explore what the rule of law means and they consider why it is important for citizens to be well- informed about the legal system. Pupils explore who has the power to make and change laws and how this impacts elections.

By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to:

➯ Describe the different roles of parliament, government and the justice system;

➯ Define what ‘the rule of law’ means and why it is important;

➯ Explain how the laws are made and who has the power to change them;

➯ Identify different ways we can make our voices heard by key decision makers in our areas.
