Why is voting important?

As a starting point, students vote on a range of issues as a class to explore the purpose and value of voting. They learn about voting as part of democratic government, including free and fair elections, who can vote in a general election and why it is so important. They go on to investigate democracy in more detail, gaining an insight into democracy around the world and different levels of democratic government. To link their learning to the upcoming general election, they learn about voter registration and create posters to remind older students to register if they want to vote in elections.
