Who stands for what? Understanding UK political parties

This scheme of work explores political parties and the left–right spectrum in UK politics, helping learners understand how parties differ and why this matters for democracy.

Learners will be able to explain what a political party is, compare major UK parties, and locate them on a simplified left–right scale, understanding how parties differ on key issues such as healthcare, education, jobs, and the environment.

This links to the Key Stage 3 Citizenship curriculum, including the development of the UK's political system and the importance of democratic participation.

Through an artefact activity, a case study on the 2019 UK General Election, and an interactive party-matching task, learners will build critical thinking and information literacy skills before a reflection activity helps them see why this matters for their future as voters. This scheme of work consists of a single lesson.
