Where does power reside in the UK?

This six-lesson Year 11 scheme of work introduces learners to how power is distributed and exercised across different levels of government in the UK. Learners explore the roles of local and national government, devolution, local government structures, elections, and the contribution of charities, NGOs and civil society to local communities.
Learners consider how local and national government differ, how powers are devolved to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and how local councils are structured, funded and responsible for delivering key public services. They also explore how elections work in the UK and the ways organisations outside government can influence communities and bring about change. The scheme supports learners to develop an understanding of where political power sits in the UK and how citizens can engage with and influence those who exercise it.
