Votes at 16

This scheme of work is about whether 16 years olds should be able to vote. It aims to ensure that learners understand the purpose of voting, the differences in the voting age across the UK, and some of the reasons given in favour and against lowering the age of enfranchisement. It encourages learners to reflect on whether they feel ready to vote, whether they would like to vote, and what they might like to learn before they are able to vote.

The scheme of work is made up of an assembly, which can be delivered by a teacher or learners, and which contains a range of prompts designed to get young people to reflect individually, in small groups, and as a class on some of the biggest issues relating to lowering the age of enfranchisement.

The scheme of work was created by Votes for Scholes and teachers may wish to deliver this scheme of work alongside the others in their programme, which cover different aspects of politics and elections in the UK.
