Power and decision making: Run a referendum

This scheme of work supports schools to run a meaningful referendum or issue-based vote, helping learners understand how they can influence decision-making and have their voice heard through voting. Students will decide on issues important to them, advocate and campaign for these issues, and take part in a vote, building their confidence to participate in democratic decision-making.

Students will work through a lesson tailored to their nation, that can be delivered in one lesson or across a number of lessons, and can be adapted to use in youth groups.

This scheme is made up of five lessons, tailored for schools in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales, with the Wales lesson available in both English and Welsh for you to choose which is relevant for you.
