How does the political system work in the UK?

This seven-lesson Year 8 scheme of work introduces learners to the organisation and operation of the UK political system.
Learners distinguish between Government and Parliament, explore how general elections work and consider what happens after an election, including the formation of majority, minority and coalition governments. They examine the roles of political parties and MPs, the organisation of the UK Government and the operation of devolved government.
The scheme develops learners’ political literacy and understanding of how political decisions are made, while reinforcing the importance of citizen participation in elections and democratic life.
