Can we trust what we see? Deepfakes and democracy

This scheme of work explores AI deepfakes and their impact on democracy, helping learners understand why questioning what they see online matters for trust and citizenship.
Learners will be able to explain what a deepfake is, examine real and AI-generated images, videos, and text, and identify the clues that distinguish them. This links to the DfE RSHE statutory guidance on online safety and the Key Stage 4 Citizenship curriculum on parliamentary democracy and citizen participation.
Through an Artefact Detective activity and whole-class discussion, learners will build critical thinking skills before a reflection activity helps them see why this matters for their role in a democratic society. This scheme of work consists of a single lesson.
